Insurance claims

  • While your first instinct following a disaster may be to start cleaning up, it is important for your insurer to have an accurate account of the damage. Before moving any debris or removing damaged belongings, make sure to take photos or video of the damage. Make a list to document these losses. If possible, save damaged items for the representative from your insurance company to review. You should also take reasonable steps to avoid further damage to your property.
  • Most insurance companies have a time requirement for filing a claim. When calling to report the loss, have your policy information handy, along with current contact information and your damage inventory, if you have one.
  • Once you have filed your insurance claim, it’s important to use a contractor who you feel comfortable with and one that understands the process of working with your insurance company.

Finding the right contractor

Your insurance company may suggest a list of contractors or “preferred providers” it’s worked with before.

Please understand that you have the right to select your own contractor. The contractor many times will have to workout discepencies with the adjuster to properly repair your property. Having good comfortable communication with the contractor is vital.

Upgrading your property

During the repair process, many property owners decide to upgrade, make sure you understand your insurance coverage before you proceed.

Understand any work that goes beyond restoring the property to its previous condition, would not be covered and you would have to pay the difference.

If your property needs upgrades to meet current building codes, check your policy or with your agent to see if you have law and ordinance coverage. It provides you with financial protection against higher repair and replacement costs due to updated building codes.
